Then a third, and up till now completely unthinkable, thing occurred. The portal behind Gale yawned open once more. Underneath the dissonant crackling of the portal’s magic, Gale could hear the distinct sound of a voice yelling and cursing in a foreign language. And before the wizard could register what in all nine hells was happening, a young woman was spat out of the portal like a wad of Chessentan chewing tobacco. She crashed into Gale’s chest, exactly like he had crashed into her the day before. Unlike Gale though, Brix did not immediately brush herself off and greet him with a practiced smile.
Instead, she resumed her cursing. At least, that’s what Gale assumed it was. He couldn’t glean any singular word from her outburst, except one terribly rude four-letter word, which was now sprinkled liberally into every other sentence.
“You!” she finally shouted and pointed an accusatory finger at Gale. “What the fuck did you do?!”

“I am going to die,” Gale whispers into the darkness, then again, directly at her sleeping form. “I truly am going to die.”
The words don’t feel quite real as they linger in the air. He shifts closer and rests his hand on the warm curve of her cheek.
“Tell me that we will find another way. You never stopped believing we could fix this, even when I thought I had exhausted every other possibility. Say that you can— please.”
He’d bore witness to the miracles she could perform first hand: commanding a devil to fall on his own sword, pulling an undead dragon from the sky, burning the very God of Death to cinders– why would it be such a foolish thing to hope she could stop this as well?
He leans closer, stopping but a breath from her face.
"I can't do it. I'm not ready."

Astarion had died. A dreadfully boring affair for the vampire, in theory. Yet, this death wasn't the expected blink of darkness turning to a swift revival. Nor did he finally descend to the Hells that most certainly awaited his tormented soul.
This death had the vampire plagued in a strange state of purgatory. He was a ghost, watching memory after memory, visions of the past and of strange events that never happened.
But while most of them made little sense to the vampire, there was one constant throughout it all... Gale.
Gale, that verbose fool of a man. Astarion's chosen target for protection should the others or anyone else turn against him.
In every vision, Gale was there, falling for his trap and becoming enamoured by the vampire. The wizard was clearly smitten—ever helpful, defending Astarion, and keeping his secrets close. And what confused Astarion most of all, so was seeing himself return the sentiment. Watching himself fall in love with the blattering human just as the human clearly fell for him too.
But these were just the deranged dreams of a dying mind. They couldn't possibly be real.
