    Summary

Ctimene was born at the height of lambing season, and just as easily.

In which Ctimene of Ithaca grows up alongside her brother, incredibly spoilt.

This is a world of myth and legend - where monsters roam the fantastical uncharted lands, and Gods walk alongside their worshipers.

Ctimene just wants to spin yarn.

Odysseus just wants to breed sheep.

Laertes and Anticlea just want their children to grow up safe.

    Chapter 32:

Eurylochus found him, dragged him towards Polites, so they could grill him for what exactly happened and shove water and towels at him, which, they reminded him, they only had a mark of the dial to make him vaguely presentable and pump him for a run-down on what had happened.

In which Odysseus makes his second apology, and the sons of Atreus socialize, and gain some connections, to some greater or lesser extent.

    Heh.

    Summary

“I am most delighted,” Penelope had said, fingers tightening gently around Ctimene’s hand, her voice earnest with joy. “Truly, most delighted – that Odysseus has a sister. For I–” and there she had laughed softly, as though confessing some girlish hope, “ –I was raised in a house of men, you see. Only brothers I had, loud and brawling, and no beloved sister. I had always longed for an elder sister. And now, the gods have granted one to me at last.”

She looked to Ctimene with wide open eyes, searching for the spark of shared sentiment. But the warmth she offered was not returned.

Ctimene had frowned, her lips parting with a slowness that suggested the words had waited long behind her teeth. She drew back just enough to reclaim the space between them, cold.

(or, in the early days after her arrival to Ithaca, Penelope talks to Ctimene in an effort to get closer to her new husband's sister - it does not go so well)

    Summary

Penelope has always been labeled as the "good wife", and her marriage as an ideal marriage with a "like-minded" husband.

But she was also a daughter in Sparta, where women were trained physically just like the men. She was a daughter of a Naiad, and so was half-divine. She ruled Ithaca without male help for 20 years - an island in an area known for its piracy. She had mean skills and the backing of the divine. She was every bit the hero that her husband was...and her story began before she even met him.

WARNING: The character of Odysseus is morally gray. As Homer says, he was "complicated." Kings of the time murdered, raped, pillaged (Need more livestock? Go steal some!), and were a law unto themselves. I am trying to walk a thin line between not rewriting history and also writing for a contemporary audience. There is reference to rape in Chapter 15. It is not explicit. Violence is not graphic, but is part of this story.

    Summary

“Oh, it hurts,” She moaned in pain.

Diomedes sighed heavily, just as he expected. “Put some cold salve on it. It will soothe the strain.”

She reached for the door’s handle and opened it slightly – only to then freeze. Her gasp was loud, sharp and immediate.

“What is it?” he demanded, striding to her side. The door swung open fully and Diomedes stopped short.

A cluster of at least a dozen servants stood in the corridor.

The silence fell like a thunderclap and Diomedes felt dread crash into him like a war chariot.

He and Telemache both blurted out together at once, “IT IS NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE!”

(or, Diomedes and Fem!Telemachus are forced to marry after being caught waking up together, chaos ensues as Odysseus' return looms in the background)

    Summary

Aphrodite had foreseen Paris' triumph – her triumph, in truth. The moment his eyes would fall upon Helen of Sparta, he would understand: this was the reward for his devotion, this was the woman the gods themselves had deemed worthy of a prince so favoured.

She had not foreseen his rejection.

Had not expected him to turn away from the prize she had laid before him, to spurn the very woman he had once coveted with all his heart.

Nor had she anticipated that his desire would stray – not to another queen, most certainly not to Helen’s own cousin.

    Penelope of Sparta.

(Or, after coming across a portrait of Penelope during his time in Sparta, Paris of Troy switches his kidnapping victim from Helen to Penelope. This proves far more detrimental than anyone could have imagined - a spark burning so bright that even the Gods on Olympus are caught in its flames.)
