Summary
The Winter Soldier, fresh out of the Potomac River and vulnerable, is stalked by Rumlow’s team before he can successfully make his escape. Dubbing the monicker Crossbones, Rumlow uses his privileges as Field Handler to collect the Asset with the promise he won't return him to Hydra. Not that Barnes has much autonomy on the matter after given a direct order, but it's a nice sentiment.
Meanwhile, news from America reaches a certain EKO Commander who can't pass up the rare opportunity of the Soldier being loose from his captors. In true dramatic fashion, and self-interest, Zemo decides to up the stakes for his own devices. Too bad Hydra--choking on the ash of their covert empire--isn’t ready to let their cherished attack dog go. Just to add fuel to the fire, having a new unauthorized Sokovian handler in play certainly throws a wrench into everyone's plans.
As for the Asset. Sgt. Barnes. Bucky. James... He just wants to learn who he is after everything, without others' opinions dictating how he's expected to act. But no one-not Rumlow, Steve, the Avengers, and certainly not Helmut-fucking-Zemo make it easy for him.
And Hydra just won't stop sprouting damn heads.
