Summary
They say time is a sensitive thing. I'm not too sure who "they" are, but they do have a point. A pebble can cause a ripple that sends everything off in a new direction. Sonic and his friends take fate into their own hands repeatedly, turning the odds to their favor. Others will argue that fate had always intended them to win, those odds were not as they seemed. Tampered with or not, fate had a plan. And if something got in the way, it wouldn't just let all that hard work go to waste.
What if Tails knew a little bit more about the Paradox Prism than he was letting on? That "Sonic, Wait!" Having more context.
Welcome to The Other Side of the Coin. When you think of perfect duos, Sonic and Tails certainly come to mind. The most pure definition of found family. A character who's a big ball of energy, with the more level-headed brother to think things through. Or, one anxious character to overthink everything with his brother there to help him loosen up. No matter how you put it, they compliment one another. But when they aren't together, maybe one would try to composite for the missing partner in crime a little too much. Maybe one would make the same mistake his presence was supposed to prevent the other from making. -

[My one-year anniversary fanfic! :D]
Ever since Sonic returned to his world, Nine has been working in the Grim, trying desperately to find out if Sonic made it - to prove it to everyone else, of course. Cue a mysterious invitation to a competition in Sonic's world. How can he resist?
Unfortunately, what began as something exciting soon becomes awful. Feeling distraught, he stumbles on an escape from reality and takes it, leaving the races behind.
...but getting trapped in a world where rain boils was not the getaway he was exactly hoping for. Forced to adapt, slowly, Nine finds a place in this world, and something starts to change.
Maybe because, unknowingly, he's sparked the start of disaster.
OR: Nine joins Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, finds out a painful truth, and ends up in the Boiling Isles. Sonic and his friends find out too late and try to rescue him, while they all face dangers and secrets. And something more powerful than originally intended starts to rise...

He wasn't quite sure how things led up to this, which may have been for the better.. everything after he charged into that Paradox Prism was a blur- almost like he had jumped through time itself. He had no clue how Eggman actually won- i mean, come on, that Egghead has lost to him dozens of times! Was that shiny rock really that powerful?
Sonic finds Nine, the New Yoke version of Tails, and the agony this town brings is unveiled the more they get to know eachother.

After the vagabond Sonic gets into legal trouble with Clean Sweep Co., he's hired to be a janitor (blackmailed into being a spy) for Spagonia University, specifically the wing that deals with the merfolk. Despite their violent nature, Sonic starts developing a bond with the sea creatures, particularly Nine, the one who looks like the brother Sonic lost. Even stranger than that, he's also forging relationships with the workers at the university and the people connected to them.
But the truth of who he is will come out eventually, and the fallout might be impossible to handle if he doesn't figure out Clutch wants in all of this.
Or, Sonic teaches merfolk how to belong while also learning this lesson and how to healthily deal with his own grief
