Zoro turns back to Sanji who’s lighting up another cigarette.
He drops his lighter, though, when he’s reaching down to slip it back into his pocket. Zoro doesn’t think much of it and moves to pick it up, just to be nice and whatever. Not that Sanji deserves him being nice since he’s such a little shit. But Zoro’s kinda in love with him so any chance he can get to get in the man’s good graces… well.
What he’s not expecting, but he should’ve all things considered, is Sanji also reaching over to pick the lighter up. Naturally, they’re both bending over into each other’s spaces and considering Sanji’s mildly drunk and Zoro’s distracted… Well, their faces get a little too close for comfort.
Or something.
Zoro can feel Sanji’s hot breath against his mouth, the tip of their noses brushing.
“Oh?” Sanji gasps and Zoro’s face burns.

The way Sanji balls his fists and scowls, face reddening with anger, moving to kick at Zoro as the perfect image of grace, body lithe and nimble like that of a dancer. The way that his hair shines in the sunlight, how the freckles from years at sea scatter gently across his skin like glitter, how he matches Zoro one for one on everything. To be so hyper aware of each other of all times that, without even thinking about it, they fight in perfect tandem, the wings of the future pirate king, equals in every way that matters.

Frowning, Zoro raises a calloused hand to his chest. Again, he muses to himself, the weird sensations. He’ll be damned if he talks to Chopper about this (he can handle it on his own), but the elevated heart rate is really unusual. Oh well. It’s probably best if he just ignores it. Maybe he just needs to train more.

________________Resting his hand against the mirror and looking into his own eyes like they were some else’s, Zoro crooned, “So, how did you get these brownies white? Instead,” he stumbled, “Of their normal brown?” It came out awkward and uncertain rather than the suave that he had been hoping for.

Summary
Exhaustion was beginning to become a constant companion to the poor cook of the Straw Hat Pirates. Sanji hadn't slept in weeks. Even after Wano, the memories of his childhood as the youngest child of the Vinsmokes has begun to haunt him through every night. Constantly woken by the visions and sounds of his family trying to destroy his nakama with beatings and hollow words, there was only so much his broken mind could take.
Unfortunately, Sanji stumbled on one solution that helps. But, no matter what, he's not willing to put himself through it. Cuddling with a crewmate was one thing, being held by Zoro of all people was another. So, deciding that he'd take some time on their next island to sort his head out and find some rest, Sanji was not ready for what was in store for their crew.
A new island only meant trouble and life altering decisions that could mean the end of Sanji's lifelong dream, or the beginning of a brand new adventure.
