Will grew up relatively religious. In the way that every Sunday consisted of gathering the small family together and stepping down to the old Hawkins Presbyterian Church in the town square.
That is until an ignorant, life long acquaintance and foul-mouthed dark haired brunette started showing up more in his dreams.
He did grow up religious. Yet, it only took slender fingers grazing his arms too many times for it all to crumble in his own hands.

Strangely enough, Mike found that he would rather be held hostage right now if that meant being held hostage with Will, as that was better than being without him.
He pushed the button down. "He's..he's gone. Will's gone."
"Gone?" Dustin repeated, sounding as stressed as Mike was right now. "What do you mean, gone?"
Mike stared at the tree, at the spot where the gate had been..

Losing Will was nothing new to Mike, happening more times than he'd be willing to admit, because really you shouldn't be losing a whole human being as often as Mike Wheeler lost Will Byers. Despite losing him once again and everything that came with it, Mike would rather die than leave him in the Upside Down. So what does Mike do? The most logical thing, of course.
He follows Will right into the hell that took him because he would follow Will anywhere.

The year is 1984, and after Ted Wheeler dies because of some stupid lab accident at his annoying government job in Hawkins, Indiana, Thirteen-year-old Mike and his family are forced to move there and stay at some lousy trailer park because 1.) moving there was the closest thing they had to still being with him, not that Mike really cared, 2.) it was the cheapest place his mom could afford when you’re in charge of a family of four with no man in the house, and 3.) because Mike had kinda maybe sorta did something really, really bad to another boy at school that unfortunately just lined up with the time him and his family had to move so… nothing important really.

Billy Hargrove hit Mike just a little bit harder, Max woke up just a little bit later and Mike Wheeler had always had shitty luck. He gets drugged, hauled to Russia and poked with so many needles that he doesn’t know where he began and the needles ended.
But it’s not so bad (He’s lying, it fucking sucks) at least he has the boy in the bed next to him, and his paper, and they finally stopped giving him cottage cheese with his meals.
He’s lying, he just wants to go home, but the doctor and this strange new thing in his chest isn’t going to let him. That’s fine, he’ll just have to get himself out.
TLDR: Mike Wheeler gets taken to Russia, gets powers and has to figure out how to get himself the hell out of there without killing himself first.

It oozed blood sluggishly, and purulent discharge was mixed with it. The plasma dripped from the healing wound, stretching from her ear to the side of her mouth. Half of her lips were missing, and her hospital gown was covered in brown blood.
"How did you die?" Mike asked.
"They killed me when I couldn't use the powers the serum gave me," She responded, blood gushing out of her mouth with every word, adding to the mess of her dress, "And they'll do the same to you if you don't figure out how to control the thing inside you."

Mike’s tongue is sticking out, and Will briefly considers ripping it out of his mouth so he’ll never have to hear that again. Who stops kissing their boyfriend to sing Never Surrender? Like a strangled cat. Will is shocked. He’s scarred for life.
He also, somehow, still wants to kiss him, which is a fact almost as bad as Mike’s singing. Almost.

Will didn’t flinch. Pencil poised, he replied evenly:
“Better lazy than garbage. You really shouldn’t judge something you clearly don’t understand.”
Mike smirked, voice sharp.
“Don’t lecture me on understanding. I can tell a bad idea when I see one, and this? That’s exactly what it is.”
Will set the pencil down slowly.
“Maybe you should focus on your own work before critiquing mine.”
Mike leaned back, eyes cold.
“Please. It's exactly what you’re doing, you're just hiding behind a pencil while thinking you’re impressive.”
Will’s jaw tightened.
“Better than hiding behind words and pretending they mean something.”OR:
fall 1992, Will is 21 as he leaves Hawkins and his family behind to study art at UCLA. College was a big change for him which also meant leaving the safeness of Hawkins. He challanges his feelings but also struggle with trauma from his childhood.
Will takes an extra course in physics where he meets Mike Wheeler, a guy who is a year older and studies literature and writing. He is also extremly annoying (according to Will) -
